We have this store because
we want kids around!

GREAT NEWS
Capitol Kids is Madison's Favorite again. But this year in TWO categories. Madison's Favorite Toy Store and Madison's Favorite Kids Clothing. Yippee! Thanks everybody.

madfaves

HELLO

Thanks for visiting our website. Take a tour here and then be sure to stop by Madison’s favorite store for kids and other playful people on The Capitol Square in downtown Madison. We carry toys, games and books that are educational, always fun and sometimes just weird and wacky. Many of our toys are heirloom quality. There is always something new to play with and plenty for kids to do while their parents shop. Grown-ups are encouraged to play too.

The fun doesn’t end with toys and games because we sell clothing that kids really like. Much of children’s clothing is usually found in children’s boutiques – but owners Peg and Jenna make sure that baby and kid’s clothing selections are just right for our Madison customers and visitors...distinctive, hip, colorful and comfortable and affordable. We pay special attention to find cute things for baby boys and great stuff for older boys too. Our collections are designed for babies, toddlers, boys to size seven and girls to size ten.

Everything in our store is carefully chosen. We place a high priority on quality and safety. Feel free to ask us about toy safety when you are in the store. This brief review of our standards will help you choose safe toys no matter where you shop. We are also pleased to give you information about how and where our merchandise is made, including countries of origin. If we don’t know right away, we will find out and let you know.

We will help you find special things and make age and interest appropriate suggestions. If you are looking for a hard-to-find toy, we can check with several hundred specialty toy shops around the country who are ASTRA members. We are often able to special order things for you. We take phone orders, send out gift certificates and provide complementary gift wrapping. We are happy to pack and ship your purchases by UPS.

Sign up for our mailing list so you don’t miss anything – fun events for kids, parent informational handouts for parents and caregivers, announcements about sales and specials and exclusive coupons.

A DECADE TO CELEBRATE
We are celebrating our 10th year as owners of Capitol Kids. We think we have a special store and the most important reason for that is YOU! We had a wonderful celebration and as a community gift, donated 10% of our sales to the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools.

SIZZLER SALE!
Our super-terrific Maxwell Street Days were pretty good, but the temperature on the street was  almost unbearable,  so we have more left than we usually do.  Lucky you! We are extending our sale on the most fabulous stuff at ridiculously low prices in our air-conditioned store.

How to find us: We are at 8 South Carroll Street, very close to West Washington Avenue on the Capitol Square. Find us between the Inn on the Park and Home Savings Bank. Look for our mascot, Webster the Bear, sitting outside the store. Here's a great map to help you find your way downtown, and to locate parking ramps. Or, visit Google Maps for detailed directions. Also, check out this handy Downtown Madison Get Around Guide to help you navigate the 2010 construction season.

Yes, you can park downtown! In fact, for the first time in more than 30 years, there is parking on our side of the street on the Capitol Square. Check out the meters right in front of the store. There are also spaces just around the corner on both sides of the block. If you’re really lucky you can park for one hour in designated spaces on the Capitol side for free. The Dane County ramp is less than two blocks away and the State Street ramp is less than three blocks away.

Capitol Kids is locally-owned and operated by mother-daughter team Peg Scholtes and Jenna Hansen. They share the job of buying clothing for the store. Both are at the store most of the time – ready to play with kids and help customers.

Peg has a long history of working with kids and families in Madison. After 25 years it was time to try something new – but it had to involve kids and have an impact on the community! In 2000, yearning to be downtown, Peg decided to open Capitol Kids on Webster Street and relocate her home to a nearby condo. By 2002, business was booming! To keep up with the growth, Capitol Kids moved to its current location on the Capitol Square, making Peg's dream for a new store a reality.

Jenna
is the mother of two and has experience in retail and business operations. Jenna uses our products, washes our clothing, knows how our brands wear and what toys stand the test of time. She also selects children’s literature. She brings practicality into the store.
